Back to Subjects"The difference between the impossible and the possible lies in a person’s determination."
Tommy Lasorda
The Pingle Academy PE department delivers a high-quality physical education curriculum taught by specialists in differing areas. Students are challenged to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically demanding activities. Our curriculum provides opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. We actively promote fairness, high ambition, respect and encourage students to take risks ultimately to build character and resilience. To compete in sport and other activities builds character and helps to embed values such as fairness and respect.
At The Pingle Academy we strive to:
- Develop competence in a broad range of physical activities that are relevant, contemporary and engaging.
- Make sure students are physically active for sustained periods of time.
- Allow ample opportunity to play competitive sport and personally develop resilience.
- Lead healthy, active lives.
Students will access a wide range of seasonal and contemporary sports across each academic year. By the end of year 9 students should have a sound knowledge of the important techniques and skills required for, competent play across invasion, net/wall, swimming, athletic and striking and fielding activities.
Students who enter KS3 are baseline tested in differing areas which include team games, individual games, basic coordination and fitness capabilities. Once assessed the classes are split into sets to assist staff in creating a challenging curriculum suitable for the ability levels of the group. This allows specialist staff to add explicit differentiation and raise expectations for all abilities including students with SEND.
Students follow a curriculum designed for seasonal sports with a specialist in each sporting area assigned control of the class. This ensures that planning and differentiation can be as explicit as possible to embed high quality PE. Students will repeat sports taught in year 7 again in year 8 and 9 to allow for progression and academic growth. Our curriculum also factors in the local community context. We actively teach sports that the area has a strong interest in and also provide additional activities to add breadth and fresh opportunity. We work hard to work closely with community clubs, teams and the local sport council to provide a community-based service that extends beyond the curriculum.
In addition to the above, our curriculum is actively designed to allow students to build their confidence and resilience. Our pathway equips students with skills that ultimately gives them access to harder situations and added pressure. We feel that this is a crucial measure in preparing our students for adult life. and a sustained approach to sport.
