Rewarding Students

Our Rewards Policy

The Pingle Academy Rewards Policy

Rationale

The Pingle Academy rewards strategy is designed to provide a positive focus for students, ensuring motivation for learning.  Through a positive rewards strategy, we aim to promote positive behaviour habits, leading to sustained progress in the classroom.

We believe that encouragement and praise is crucial to promote high standards of behaviour.  In rewarding students, we wish to ensure: they feel valued, they are able to build their confidence and they are motivated to achieve.  Rewarding good behaviour enables students to realise that desirable behaviour, self-discipline and a responsibility to themselves and others is highly valued in our community.

We will ensure that, regardless of ability and age, all students across the academy will be able to benefit from an effective rewards system which is applied through Faculties, Year Teams and the Leadership Team.

What we are rewarding

Our core values will form the basis for rewarding students through the awarding of achievement points on ClassCharts.  Examples of behaviours for each core value are indicated below as a guide and not an exhaustive list.  Students will accumulate achievement points and are able to spend these rewards in our online shop where they can purchase items such as equipment, confectionary, vouchers and much more.

Work Hard: Producing excellent work, positive contribution to lessons, scoring well in assessments, completing extra homework/revision, out of school activities (such as representing the county, or achieving a grade in an instrument).

Be Kind: Helping other students, holding a door open, handing the books out, work in the community (for example charity work).

Choose Wisely: Reporting an incident, supporting the academy shows, making good decisions.

How students will be rewarded

Students will receive a range of rewards either daily, weekly, monthly, termly or yearly.

  • Daily achievement points for good work in lessons and attendance each day.
  • Weekly through nominations for “student of the week” in subject areas.
  • Monthly through subject based “student of the month” awards.
  • Termly through “Golden tickets” for exceptional work/behaviour and celebration assemblies led by Heads of Year.
  • Yearly through academy celebration evenings.
  • Periodically through Principal awards.

Daily Rewards

Recognition ladder:

Students are recognised and rewarded for an accumulation of achievement points.  Personalised rewards are based on net points, which is the student’s achievement points minus their behaviour points.  Where a reward is based on total points, this is the student’s total number of achievement points only.

Weekly Rewards

Student of the week:

Each week, subject teachers will nominate one student to receive their ‘student of the week’ award.  Nominations will also contain a brief reason for being chosen and will be recorded on ClassCharts.  Students may receive a nomination for: fantastic work, excellent attitude to learning, community spirit, excellent attainment, great progress, going above and beyond, or any other reason a teacher deems fit.  Every student will receive a certificate to take home and, additionally, will be entered into a draw with other students in their year group who have received a ‘student of the week’ award.  The draw will take place in assembly each week and the winning student will receive a £5 voucher.

Monthly Rewards

Student of the month:

Each month, Faculties will decide on their ‘Star of the Month’ award.  This reward will be focused specifically on the work students produce within the lessons of that Faculty.  Where applicable, a display of the student’s work will be visible within the corridors of the Faculty to showcase excellent work.  Heads of Faculty will award on ClassCharts and ensure parents/carers receive information about why a “Star of the Month” has been awarded.

Termly Rewards

Celebration assemblies:

Each term, Heads of Year will host a celebration assembly.  This will involve special mentions and comments from staff, results of competitions between forms for behaviour and attendance, top achievement point earners, most frequent users of key revision sites such as GCSEPod and also special awards such as: Assistant Head of Year Award, Head of Year Award and Leadership Team Link Award.  Students will also receive recognition for improved conduct where net points will be compared to the previous term and all students that have remained the same or have improved their net points will be entered into a draw.  The name drawn will then receive a £10 voucher.

Golden Tickets:

Golden tickets will be awarded for exceptional work and/or behaviour each term.  Every teacher will have five golden tickets to distribute over a two-week period.  Students who receive a golden ticket will all be entered into a draw where five names will be drawn out at random.  The first two students will receive a £100 voucher each and three further students will each receive a £50 voucher.  Golden ticket nominations will also be recorded on ClassCharts with a brief explanation of why.

Yearly Rewards

Celebrating excellence evening (Year 11 and 13):

Each year there will be a dedicated evening to celebrate those students with the highest academic achievement.  Students in Year 11 and 13 will be invited to a special evening held at Burton Albion Football Club.  Guest motivational speakers will share their experiences and Heads of Year and families will be invited to share in the celebration of each student’s attainment.  This is always a special evening for all involved.

Celebrating achievement evening (Year 7, 8 and 9):

Each year, students in Year 7, 8, and 9 with the highest attainment are invited along to an evening held at The Pingle Academy where their outstanding accomplishments are recognised and rewarded.

Within this evening, there are also special awards for outstanding achievements within Sports and the Arts.

There are also Head of Year Awards and a Principal’s Award.

This evening is an opportunity to reward and recognise the talents, achievements and ambitions of many students

Additional Rewards

Principal’s awards:

In addition to special recognition for accumulation of achievement points, the Principal will also host breakfasts for students that have gone above and beyond or achieved special accolades.  This may include, but is not limited to: work in the community, sporting achievements, performing arts achievements, extra-curricular achievements.  This will be an opportunity for the students to have their accomplishments recognised by the Principal.
