Mathematics
Back to Subjects“Without mathematics, there’s nothing you can do. Everything around you is mathematics. Everything around you is numbers.”
Shakuntala Devi
Our Mathematics curriculum promotes mastery of the subject and will improve problem solving skills, as well as in-depth knowledge of basic skills. Maths is powerful and important as it can show things to be absolutely true. Students will learn skills that they will need to be lifelong learners. Our teachers engineer the best possible start for students by closing gaps in knowledge of mathematical facts, concepts, vocabulary and symbols that are introduced at primary school. Our focus is to teach high-quality maths education to ensure all students are taught concepts that are useful now and in the next stage of education.
Our curriculum is designed in progression to ensure new content draws on and links to content that pupils have previously acquired. We regularly assess the students through various methods including low-stakes testing of taught content this helps prepare students for final exams by providing memory-enhancing opportunities to recall and apply taught content. We also do open book assessments, as well as formal assessments. Teachers provide feedback regularly to application tasks completed in lessons and plan future lessons in accordance to ensure all students are making progress.
At Key Stage 4, Maths is a core subject and students are entered for either Higher or Foundation GCSE in Year 11. Some students also have the opportunity to complete GCSE Further Maths qualification.
At Key Stage 5, students are entered for A-level Mathematics at the end of Year 13. Students who have chosen A/S level Further Mathematics are also entered at the end of Year 13.
At the Pingle Academy students have individual logins to Sparx Maths in order to complete homework and independant learning. Weekly we organise a Quiz of the week and have inter form competitions with Time Tables Rock Stars. In order to help students understand the impact of mathematics in the wider curriculum we ask students to collect their maths moments from other subjects. Students have the opportunity to enter the UKMT challenge and weekly we organise a Qiuz of the Week that all students can enter to win a prize. Revision for KS4 is offered by class teachers.
Mathematics gives us the critical ability to learn and think logically in any field of endeavor. Studying mathematics not only will develop more engineers and scientists, but also produce more citizens who can learn and think creatively and critically, no matter their career fields.
